The Answer
a) Raphael, was the top painter in Rome at the time, he and Michelangelo were competitors. Raphael, was already working on painting the Papal Apartments in the Vatican Palace. Raphael and Bramante (the Pope’s architect) suggested Michelangelo for the job — not because they admired him, but because they thought he’d fail. After all Michelangelo considered himself a sculpture not a painter.
b) The fresco that is universally agreed contains Michelangelo’s self-portrait is, “The Last Judgment” (1536–1541)
– The flayed skin held by St. Bartholomew depicts Michelangelo’s face.
– It’s seen as his spiritual confession and the one self-portrait scholars agree upon.
