On July 11, 1798, the United States Marine Corps was officially re-established.
Background – Most people think the Marine Corps birthday is, July 11th, because that’s when they were officially re-established as a permanent force. But they actually celebrate their birthday on a different date.
Here’s today’s quiz:
Part A: On what date does the United States Marine Corps officially celebrate its birthday every year? Answer: November 10th. On this date in 1775, the Continental Marines were established by the Continental Congress. They were the naval infantry force of the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. Their main roles were to fight on ships, conduct amphibious raids, and provide security for naval vessels.
Part B: Who was the first Commandant of the Continental Marines? Answer: Samuel Nicholas. He was commissioned as the very first officer in the Continental Marines in 1775. He led their first amphibious landing in the Bahamas, later marched with George Washington’s army, and is considered the first Commandant of the Marine Corps by tradition.
